“Kendo is a way to discipline the human character through the application of the principles of the katana (sword).”
Concept of Kendo – All Japan Kendo Federation, 1975
Kendo is known as Japanese Fencing; the meaning of the word is “The Way of the Sword”. It is a “way of life” that can be practised by people of all ages with persuasion of improvement, endurance, acceptance and awareness. It is a multi-layered discipline, in which you can challenge yourself physically or mentally, or you can focus to philosophical and spiritual part more, or only have a mindful exercise to relax; you are welcome as long as you enjoy it and maybe you find your own way.
For visual artist and scenographer Taciser Sevinc, “the way of the sword” is correlating with “the way of artistic research” she is conducting; in which she is using the concepts and methodologies of kendo to gain knowledge for her research, as well as the actual practice of kendo in her dojo Yushinkan, performative walking sessions, interviews and more. She wants to reach people who are interested in learning new ways to get to know themselves and discover the power inside to become a better person.
The swords will be provided by Taciser, all you need to do is to come with comfortable clothes, the practice will be barefoot and in English. This workshop can only take place with a minimum of 2 participants.
